Head to the Murray region to enjoy the great climate, historic towns, superb food and wine and endless opportunities for outdoor activities along one of the world's great rivers.

The Murray River is one of the longest navigable rivers in the world, stretching 2,700 kilometres from the mountains of the Great Dividing Range in north-eastern Victoria to journey's end near Adelaide in South Australia.

The township of Echuca-Moama offers a unique insight into the region's rich riverboat history. It is home to the largest paddle steamer fleet in Australia and has an authentic working port where you can see riverboats being restored. Many are still working and run short cruises down the Murray. Alternatively, hire a houseboat and explore the river at your own pace.

Navigate the river, stopping along the way to experience the restaurants, wineries and golf courses that line its banks.
Mildura is known for its fresh local produce, an array of award winning wineries and superb culinary offerings served up at popular restaurants like Stefano's. It is also a good base for exploring the Australian outback and the World Heritage listed Mungo National Park with its spectacular sculpted sandhills and ancient Aboriginal history.

While Echuca-Moama, Mildura and Albury Wodonga are among the most popular destinations on the Murray, there are many other towns worth visiting while you travel throughout the region.

The Murray River winds its way through the heart of the region, providing endless opportunities for water activities. Spend relaxing days exploring the river in a houseboat, take a ride in an historic paddle steamer or explore the reserves and wetlands in a canoe. Find a secluded spot on a river beaches to soak up some sun and enjoy a relaxing picnic or a spot of fishing. If you after something a bit more strenuous, strap on some waterskis or join a white water rafting adventure. There are also a number of excellent riverside golf courses where you can tee off surrounded by beautiful natural bushland and stunning river views.

Beyond the lush green riverbank stretches the Australian outback. Explore the rugged terrain on foot or join a 4WD or four-wheel motorbike tour. If you have the time and inclination to sleep under the stars, set up camp in the wilderness. And if you’d rather see this stunning scenery from the air, take to the skies in a hot air balloon or a joy flight in a light aircraft.

Forming the border between Victoria and New South Wales, the Murray River is home to paddle steamers, classic Australian country and a host of spectacular resort courses.

A favourable climate and conditions allow year-round golf in the region, and many of the Murray’s courses are as famous for the food and entertainment of their large clubhouses as they are for their challenging golf on offer. Many also have on-course accommodation, so you can roll straight out of bed and onto the first tee.

British Open champion and well-known course architect Peter Thompson designed several courses in the region. Some are on the banks of the beautiful river and have fairways lined with signature river red gum trees. This is a truly Australian setting for golf.

Once a virtual desert, 19th century irrigation has transformed the Murray region into one of the nation’s most fertile agricultural areas. The region is the state’s largest wine-producing region – over two-thirds of the total wine production originates here and the warm Mediterranean climate encourages a huge range of fruits and is now the centre of Australia’s dried fruit industry. The Murray River also provides a plethora of fresh water fish including yabbies, Murray crays and the famed Murray cod.
