Gippsland is one of Australia's longest established and best known food tourism destinations producing an array of excellent cheeses, fine meats, wonderful seafood and organic fruits and vegetables. Wine in Gippsland also has a growing reputation for premium, cool climate wines with full fruit flavours to partner the food delights. There are more than 40 cellar doors open to the public in Gippsland so why not turn off the beaten track to discover the wine.

Gippsland’s fabulously diverse scenic attractions offer visitors pristine, uncrowded beaches, vast lakes, untamed wilderness and one of Victoria’s most popular snowfields.

Wilsons Promontory or 'The Prom', as it is fondly called, is one of Victoria’s best-known attractions at the southern most point of mainland Australia. Renowned for its spectacular scenery, the 50,000 hectare national park features magnificent and secluded beaches, cool fern gullies, great views, spectacular rock formations and an abundance of wildlife.

The drive from the entrance at Yanakie to Tidal River settlement is scenic and is well-signposted, with car parks, beaches and bushland accessible via side roads. However, the best way to enjoy the spectacular scenery is on one of the many walking trails throughout the peninsula.

The Gippsland Lakes system is Australia’s biggest and most beautiful expanse of inland waterways with over 400 square kilometres of lakes, rivers, lagoons and islands to explore.

The lakes were originally shallow coastal lagoons that were part of a large bay but over thousands of years sand has built up in deposits along the coastline and the lakes are now separated from the ocean by a beautiful strip of coastal sand dunes known as the Ninety Mile Beach.

Beginning at Sale on the Thomson River, there are three main lakes: Lake King, Lake Victoria and Lake Wellington and they are all joined and fed by rivers that originate in the high country, including the Mitchell, Nicholson, Tambo and Avon rivers. The lakes include many small islands, which are reached easily by ferry or water taxi from Paynesville. The two most visited islands are Raymond Island, which is home to a large koala colony and a rich array of flora and fauna and Rotamah Island, famous for its bird life. There are also two national parks that abut the lakes, the Lakes National Park and the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, both of which offer great camping and walking tracks.

A unique feature of the Gippsland Lakes is the Mitchell River silt jetties, which snake eight kilometres out into Lake King from the mouth of the mighty Mitchell River. The jetties are a geographical rarity of world renown second in size only to the immense silt jetties of the Mississippi. The best place to view the jetties is from the lookout at Eagle Point near Bairnsdale.

Paynesville is surrounded by the Gippsland Lakes on three sides. Its canals and inlets offer plentiful sheltered moorings for yachts and cruisers, and anglers, windsurfers, jet skiers, and water skiers flock to the town to take to the water.

Metung is a small and stylish village located on a peninsula that extends into the tranquil waters of the Gippsland Lakes. The town has sandy beaches, a 1.5-kilometre boardwalk and public jetties. With over 400 square kilometres of water to explore, the village is a great base for water sports enthusiasts.

A popular holiday spot for over 100 years, Lakes Entrance has an easy seaside charm. Located on the edge of Ninety Mile Beach where the Gippsland Lakes meets the Southern Ocean, many of the local activities are water based. Lakes Entrance is renowned as the 'Seafood Capital' due to the large number of fishing trawlers operating in the area. Visit nearby scenic Lake Tyers, bordered by ocean and state forest and a river that meanders inland to Nowa Nowa.
