Bongaree

Bongaree is one of three small settlements on Bribie Island, a 31-kilometre island 26 kilometres east of Caboolture, to the north of Brisbane.

The island on the northern reaches of Moreton Bay is separated from the mainland by a bridge and Pumicestone Passage, which is renowned for safe boating and good fishing and supports an extraordinary diversity of fauna.

Bribie, in fact, is the only one of hundreds of Queensland off-shore islands linked by bridge to the mainland. More than 350 species of birds and waterfowl breed and live on the waterway which is also home to dugongs, turtles and passing dolphins which never fail to put on an act.

Apart from Bongaree, which lies at the southern opening of the passage, and its sister villages of Bellara and Woorim, Bribie is largely unspoiled.

It is a protected wildlife sanctuary draped in sub-tropical bushland networked by superb bushwalking tracks and flanked by kilometres of white, sandy inshore and surfing beaches washed by the Coral Sea. [Less]
