Burwood is an established residential area, with some commercial areas along Warrigal Road and High Street Road. Ashwood - Burwood is bounded by Highbury Road in the north, Huntingdale Road in the east, the Glen Waverley railway line in the south, and Warrigal Road in the west. Part of the suburb of Burwood is located in the City of Whitehorse. Ashwood is named from a combination of the nearby suburbs of Ashburton and Burwood. Burwood is named after an early property in the area.

Settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for market gardens and poultry farms. The area remained largely rural until the post-war years. Significant development occurred from the early 1950s, including public housing construction in the Jordanville area. The population has increased since the mid 1990s, a result of new dwellings being added to the area.
